Xenia Rubinos Círculos de Voces Workshop (60-90min)

An intimate workshop exploring the Circulo de Voces as a collective. All who want to connect with their voice in a group are encouraged to join. Attendance could be capped to allow for more vulnerability and space. Taller could be offered bilingually in English and Spanish. Participants will be guided through embodiment practices, collective improvisation and compositional prompts to use individually and in community to tap into their voices.

“In its totality, the chorus is uncontainable, and potentially infinite, like a body of water, or a diaspora.” - Elisa Peebles on Circulo de Voces

Circulo de Voces is a public performance piece and series of talleres reimagining the choir as a public service, like a library or park. We center the voice as a primary tool for connection and collective transcendence. Inspired by the group vocalizations in Cuban Rumba and Puerto Rican Bomba y Plena, as well as Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening, Xenia is composing user-friendly pieces centering embodiment, collective improvisation and the use of refranes to ground the group in structure while deconstructing phrases and empowering singular voices to emerge, creating the sound of a new kind of coro.

Esto No Tiene Nombre: The Film, a new poetic and sonic one-woman show by Denice Frohman.

This powerful work uplifts the oral histories of Latina lesbian elders and women over 50. Told through a series of vignettes, the show places Denice Frohman in conversation with her elders to trace lineages of love, desire, and identity. Guided by these first-person stories, from pre-Stonewall police raids in Philadelphia to first kisses, Esto No Tiene Nombre embraces a living history to chart a path of belonging for the future.

Presentation & Workshop

Stateless (Apátrida)

In 1937, tens of thousands of Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent were exterminated by the Dominican army, based on anti-black hatred fomented by the Dominican government. Fast-forward to 2013, the Dominican Republic’s Supreme Court stripped the citizenship of anyone with Haitian parents, retroactive to 1929. The ruling rendered more than 200,000 people stateless, without nationality, identity or a homeland. In this dangerous climate, a young attorney named Rosa Iris mounts a grassroots campaign, challenging electoral corruption and advocating for social justice. Director Michèle Stephenson’s documentary Stateless traces the complex tributaries of history and present-day politics, as state-sanctioned racism seeps into mundane offices, living room meetings, and street protests.
