PHLAFF Week Cuatro— 6/21 Workshop at Taller Puertorriqueño!

A gentle reminder that this weekend’s Cherry Street Pier events are being rescheduled due to the heatwave hitting the city.

However, worry not! PHLAFF still has an incredible offering for you today, June 21, at Taller Puertorriqueño! We hope to see you stop by at 4:00pm for a wonderful workshop that tackles the complexities of preserving and celebrating Puerto Rican heritage.

CIRCULO DE MEMORIA: PHILLYRICAN EXPERIENCES —June 21, 4:00pm

How do you celebrate Puerto Rican culture? That will be the question at the center of this community gathering.

There is a systemic erasure of memory. Our personal archives—pictures, letters, songs, and memories– are ways that we preserve that history and pass it on to future generations. Círculo de la Memoria (Memory Circles) are an oral history tool that aims to validate our lived experiences and record our memories. The circle will be facilitated by Camille Padilla Dalmau and Frances Medina of 9 Millones, an independent news network committed to amplifying the voices of Puerto Rican communities.

Participants will be invited to think about who are the storytellers in their communities, their connection to Puerto Rico, how they celebrate our culture, and how we preserve our stories.

Each participant is invited to share a photo, recipe, story, song, dance, poem, or any memory that speaks to their connection to Puerto Rico’s culture, identity, territory, and history.

The workshop will be offered bilingually in English and Spanish.
