PHLAFF Week SEIS — What to Expect!
Familia, we’ve made it to WEEK SEIS!! Our last week of the festival is here, and although we’re sad to close this festival season, we have such an exciting week ahead of us that it’s impossible to stay down.
As always, starting today, we have new virtual selections available through our Eventive page, including our “Complicated Connections” and “SCI-FI: Call Home” Shorts blocks— two of our PHLAFF Team’s favorites!! Learn more about these virtual shorts and features below.
On Saturday, you can catch us at iMPeRFeCT Gallery for a full day of features and Los Especiales selections. On Sunday, our last day of the festival, we will have films and performances to ring into the night, where we will have our closing celebration!
We’ve appreciated the community’s love and support this 2024 season and we are excited to go out strong! WE hope to see you all there this weekend!

LOS SHORTS - COMPLICATED CONNECTIONS
Mariela
Mariela, a middle-aged woman, receives a call from his brother, Marcos, who tells her it is their mother's dying wish to see her again. Mariela decides to travel to her childhood house in Vallejuelo, where she will run into a long kept family secret.
Las Tardes / The Afternoons
Laura, Carolina, and María play day by day without the supervision of their mother, who has just had a baby, and whose presence, annoying but unspoken, is equivalent to the family background that is experienced in the house, which is reinforced by the notion that a baby is perceived as a problem when it arrives at an inappropriate time. Faced with this situation, the innocence of the girls is forfeited, as they were never accustomed to these new emotions and act accordingly.
Laura, Carolina y María juegan día a día sin la supervisión de su madre, quien acaba de tener un hijo, y cuya presencia, molesta pero tácita, es equivalente al trasfondo familiar que se vive en la casa, lo que se refuerza a partir de la figuración de que un bebé se percibe como un problema cuando llega en un momento inadecuado. Y frente a esta situación, se genera la pérdida de la inocencia de las niñas, quienes nunca antes acostumbradas a estas nuevas emociones, actúan en consecuencia.

LOS SHORTS - SCI-FI: Call Home
Illegal Alien
Three alien women with futuristic sound headgear walk around enclosed spaces engulfed in sand. Connected by their common ability to listen to the energy/vibrations/sound transmission that abandoned objects of the past/future emit, these alien women react to the stories of migrant Venezuelan women the objects carry. As the film progresses women’s testimonials enlarge and intermingle as the alien women gain more control over the environment they’re in.
IRON LUNG
When a storm knocks out the power to her iron lung, a polio survivor and her caretaker sister find themselves in a race against time to find a new way for her to breathe.
Chimera
Haunted by the past, a brilliant tech-addicted developer faces an impossible dilemma: recreate her ex-girlfriend in virtual reality or hold onto the crumbling relationship with her current one.
OASIS
Alta California, 1845. Alma is a young Mexican woman living in an isolated ranch with her mother Josefa. A skilled pottery maker looking to escape poverty, Alma’s work has become her only priority in life. After learning that Josefa tragically passed away while she was too busy
working, Alma becomes sick with the guilt of her loss. She takes on an obsessive amount of work to drown out the guilt, which leads to a serious injury. Suddenly, Alma’s world is flipped upside down when a series of supernatural disturbances begin to test her sanity. No matter how many pots she makes, she always wakes to find her pieces ruined. It almost seems as if the earth is swallowing her entire home- including her. Even stranger, she begins to hear the voice of her mother around the empty home. Will Alma manage to get a hold of her life or lose herself trying?
